13 Free Crochet Owl Patterns with PDF Downloads

24 Min Read

Big round eyes can turn almost anything into an owl: a little stuffed character, a basket for spare yarn, even the wrap around your morning mug. These free crochet owl patterns explore that idea in thirteen different projects, so there is plenty to choose from beyond amigurumi.

You will find small owls, larger softies, two pillow styles, storage baskets, a tote, a snowy owl hat and a matching baby gift set. Each entry has its own free PDF download, with the yarn, hook and finished measurements listed here to help you choose.

Colour options stay together as one pattern, and the booties and beanie are one coordinated project. The forest basket download includes extra tree and leaf designs, but the owl basket is the focus of that entry. Start with the object you want to make, then pick the owl face you like best.

1. Nite Owl

Crochet · Easy

Nite Owl stands out because its wings reach sideways instead of resting against its body. The small upright centre and broad wing shape make it a lively little display piece, especially in a yarn with several colours running through it.

The body is worked in continuous rounds, while the wings are made separately, folded and finished along their edges. Those different directions are what give the owl its shape. Keep a marker at the beginning of the body rounds so the decreases stay easy to track.

At only 2½ inches tall, this is one of the smaller projects here, although its wings need more shelf space than that height suggests. The supplied version uses safety eyes and stuffing; treat it as a decorative make rather than a pet toy.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Red Heart Boutique Treasure with Red Heart With Love accents.
  • Tools: 3.75 mm hook; safety eyes, stuffing, stitch marker and yarn needle.
  • Sizing: 7½ inches across the wings; 2½ inches tall.

2. Crochet Owl in Two Colourways

Crochet · Intermediate

Turquoise texture around the eyes and belly makes these little owls look especially fluffy. The white and purple versions swap the main colours, so you can make a coordinated pair without treating them as two different designs.

This intermediate pattern uses a small hook and super-fine yarn. That combination produces a very different fabric from the chunky owl trio later in the list, even though both projects begin with a rounded body.

Check the yarn pack and colour instructions before substituting. The two-owl yield belongs to the specified yarn and pattern, not to any random ball of yarn. The height also excludes the ear tufts, which add a little more to the outline.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Red Heart Amigurumi Textures; the PDF states one Owl colour pack makes two versions.
  • Tools: 2.25 mm hook; 6 mm safety eyes, stuffing and yarn needle.
  • Sizing: Approximately 4 inches tall, excluding ear tufts.

3. Ollie the Owl

Crochet · Easy

Ollie has a rounded blue body, a green head and small wings that stick out at the sides. The long beak and little tufts give this owl a different expression from the wide-eyed miniature above.

Look closely at the construction notes before starting: this body is worked in turned rows and then finished into shape. It is not simply another continuous-round amigurumi pattern. The eyes are made with yarn, which also changes the finishing process.

Choose this one if you want an owl large enough to show its details from across a shelf. It shares a name with the blanket-yarn Ollie trio below, but the two PDFs describe different designs and should stay separate in your project folder.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Red Heart Super Saver in four colours.
  • Tools: 4 mm hook; split-ring marker, fiberfill and yarn needle.
  • Sizing: 9 inches tall.

4. Wise Owl Ornament

Crochet · Easy

A tiny turquoise scarf gives the Wise Owl Ornament its winter look. The brown body and cream eyes keep the face clear, while the scarf supplies the bright colour that helps it stand out against greenery.

The body and head are shaped together, with separate patches and smaller parts added afterward. The top is flattened and sewn to form the pointed ears. The PDF includes both a close view and a photograph of the owl hanging in a tree.

Six inches is fairly substantial for an ornament, so check the intended display space before making several. Keep the finished scarf and hanging loop away from pets and young children; this is a decoration, not a tug toy.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Red Heart Soft in five colours; only small amounts of the accent shades are needed.
  • Tools: 4 mm hook; 9 mm safety eyes, fiberfill and yarn needle.
  • Sizing: 6 inches tall.

5. Owl Mug Wrap

Crochet · Easy

The mug wrap is a good place to start if you want an owl project you can use every day. Two white eye circles and a yellow beak turn a simple textured band into a face, with the mug handle left accessible.

The pattern explains how to change the height and width: it uses even-number adjustments to the starting chain or row count. Measure your actual mug first rather than expecting one wrap to fit every shape.

Try the closure on an empty, cool mug before using it. Keep the rim and handle clear, and use the handle to lift the cup. This decorative wrap has no tested heat-protection rating, so it should not be treated as an oven mitt or a substitute for a secure grip.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Red Heart Super Saver in Cherrycola, Gold and Soft White.
  • Tools: 5 mm hook; two 12 mm eye buttons, one closure button and yarn needle.
  • Sizing: 3¾ inches tall; width can be adjusted to the mug.

6. Whimsical Owl Pillow

Crochet · Easy

This pillow puts an owl on a square cushion rather than making the whole cushion owl-shaped. The green background gives the purple body and teal wings plenty of room to stand out, with orange details repeated around the border.

Two squares form the cover. The owl is made in sections and sewn to the front before the pillow form is enclosed. That order matters: it is much easier to attach the face and wings while you can still reach the back of the front panel.

Most pieces use the larger hook; the eye edging uses the smaller one. Keep the two sizes labelled as you work. Choose this design for a sofa or reading chair, and keep pillows out of an infant’s sleep space.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Red Heart Super Saver in seven colours.
  • Tools: 5.5 mm and 3.75 mm hooks; 16-inch pillow form and yarn needle.
  • Sizing: 16 × 16 inches including the border.

7. Oversized Owl Pillow

Crochet · Easy

Here the entire pillow becomes an owl. A wide lilac body, pointed upper corners and large scalloped eyes make a bold shape without needing a separate square background.

The PDF offers two finishing routes: stuff and close it as a pillow, or add the specified zipper or buttons for pajama or soft-toy storage. Decide which version you want before closing the top; the optional storage hardware is listed separately.

This is one design with two uses, not two different patterns. The eye buttons and any closure hardware need particular attention when deciding who will use the finished piece. It is not an infant sleep pillow, and the decorative face is not designed for chewing.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Bernat Baby Blanket for the body and eyes; Bernat Super Value for the nose.
  • Tools: 8 mm and 5 mm hooks; large eye buttons, fiberfill and tapestry needle.
  • Sizing: Approximately 18 inches wide × 14 inches tall when sitting.

8. Snowy Owl Crochet Hat

Crochet · Easy

White yarn and pale eye rings give this hat its snowy owl look. Earflaps, braids and fluffy tufts extend the character beyond the face, making it quite different from a plain beanie with eyes added.

The size list runs from babies to adults, but age labels are only a starting point. Check gauge and compare the finished hat with the wearer’s head as you work. The same hook does not guarantee the same fit when yarn or tension changes.

The pattern includes long braided finishing details. Consider those details when choosing the wearer and occasion, and keep them from becoming ties around the neck. Use the actual size-specific instructions rather than scaling the photograph by eye.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Caron Simply Soft in white, with small black, bone and grey accents.
  • Tools: 5 mm hook, stitch markers and the wire brush specified for finishing.
  • Sizing: Six age-based sizes, from 0–3 months through adult.

9. It’s a Hoot Owl Container

Crochet · Easy

This owl earns its place beside a craft chair. The basket-style body holds supplies, while the large white eyes and small brown beak sit on the outside without taking up the storage space.

Front- and back-post double crochet create the woven-looking texture. The project is labelled easy, but those post stitches are worth practising if you have only worked into the tops of stitches so far.

Check the base and sidewall instructions carefully, especially where the pattern changes which loops are used. Keep your intended contents light enough for the finished fabric to support. The handles are part of a crochet container, with no tested carrying-load claim.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Red Heart Super Saver: two skeins of Buff and one each of Soft White and Warm Brown.
  • Tools: 6 mm hook; stitch marker and yarn needle.
  • Sizing: 10 inches tall × 10 inches in diameter across the bottom.

10. Wise Owl Tote Bag

Crochet · Easy

The tote carries the owl theme out of the house. Pink wings sit at the sides of the bag, and the contrasting belly patch makes the face-and-body arrangement easy to recognize even from a small photograph.

The body and strap use two strands of yarn with the larger hook. The smaller decorative pieces switch to one strand and the smaller hook. Keeping that change in mind prevents a wing or eye patch from ending up much heavier than intended.

This is a small bag, so compare its 8-by-7-inch body with what you want to carry. Check the strap attachment and buttons before use, especially if it is a gift for a child. No lining or heavy-load performance is assumed from the picture.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Red Heart Super Saver in four colours; the body and strap use two strands together.
  • Tools: 6 mm and 4 mm hooks; two 12 mm eye buttons and yarn needle.
  • Sizing: 8 inches wide without wings × 7 inches high.

11. Crochet Ollie the Owl Toy Trio

Crochet · Easy

These chunky owls have broad bellies, small feet and folded wings. Coral, gold and turquoise move between the body parts in each version, giving the trio a coordinated look while keeping the same construction.

The PDF includes real making-stage photographs: crocheted pieces, face assembly, stuffing and attaching details. Those are useful references if the written finishing instructions leave you wondering where a part belongs.

The three colourways count as one pattern entry here. Make one owl or work through the full trio using the PDF’s colour assignments. As supplied, the pattern uses plastic safety eyes; the name does not make the finished item suitable for every age or for pets.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Bernat Blanket in Terracotta Rose, Gold and Aquatic; one ball of each makes the three listed versions.
  • Tools: 6.5 mm hook; 15 mm safety eyes, stuffing and yarn needle.
  • Sizing: Approximately 12 inches tall × 8 inches wide.

12. Owl Whooties Baby Booties and Beanie

Crochet · Easy

The matching booties and beanie repeat the same lavender-and-white owl face. Dark purple stitching supplies the eye centres and nose, so the expression is carried by yarn details rather than button eyes.

Sizing changes through both hook size and gauge. The PDF gives separate gauges for the booties and beanie, so make the relevant sample for each piece. Its age labels are approximate; compare the stated sole length and hat circumference with the intended baby.

The final round shapes the little points used in the owl face, so follow its changes of stitch height carefully. Optional tassels appear in the PDF; consider leaving them off a baby gift and inspect every sewn-on detail. The set photographs show the finished pieces and close-ups that help with face placement.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Red Heart Soft Baby Steps with a Super Saver accent; worsted-weight substitutes are allowed by the PDF.
  • Tools: 5 mm or 6 mm hook according to the chosen size and gauge; yarn needle.
  • Sizing: Bootie soles: 3½ or 4½ inches. Beanie circumferences: approximately 14 or 16 inches.

13. Reversible Owl Basket from the Forest Trio

Crochet · Intermediate

The owl in this basket is worked into the fabric as colourwork. That gives it a flatter, more graphic look than the separate eye circles on the other container. It is a strong choice if you prefer a restrained palette and enjoy following a chart.

The full seventeen-page download includes the owl, tree and leaf baskets, plus technique tutorials. This entry focuses on the largest owl basket; the two smaller forest designs are useful extras in the same PDF, not additional owl patterns.

Pay attention to the measurement wording: 24 inches is the circumference, not the diameter. The tutorial photographs use contrasting practice colours and sample pieces to explain techniques; they are not alternate owl basket designs. Keep the chart and written instructions together while working.

  • Yarn in the PDF: Knit Picks Brava Worsted; owl basket uses 215 yards of white and 320 yards of grey.
  • Tools: 5 mm hook.
  • Sizing: Owl basket: 24 inches in circumference × 8 inches high.

Choose an owl project by how you will use it

For shelves and seasonal displays

Nite Owl and the four-inch Crochet Owl keep the footprint small. The Wise Owl Ornament adds a scarf and hanging display option. Ollie offers a larger upright shape, while the blanket-yarn trio gives you a much chunkier finish.

For useful gifts and home projects

Choose the mug wrap for a mug you can measure, a container or reversible basket for light storage, or the tote for a small bag. For a cushion, decide whether you prefer an owl appliqué on a square cover or an owl-shaped pillow.

For wearable gifts

Snowy Owl has the broadest age range in this set. Owl Whooties combines two coordinated baby accessories. Gauge matters for both: an age label cannot replace the actual head or foot measurement.

For a pet-loving home

Animal-themed crochet fits naturally beside PetsCrochet’s pet projects, but these PDFs are decorative, household or human-use designs. None is presented here as a tested dog or cat toy. Keep finished pieces and loose yarn where a pet cannot pull off or swallow the small details. Cats Protection home-safety guidance.

Before you start crocheting

Read the materials and finishing together

Some owls use buttons or plastic eyes, others use yarn details. Check that choice before starting a closed stuffed body. Treat skein counts as the PDF’s purchasing list unless an actual yardage is given; small accent pieces do not necessarily use a full skein.

Plan gifts for the intended recipient

For babies and children under three, avoid small detachable parts such as buttons or plastic eyes. Securely stitched yarn features avoid adding those hard parts, but do not certify a homemade item as safe. Inspect attachments and keep decorative pieces out of reach when they are not appropriate for the child. CPSC small-parts guidance.

Keep baby sleep spaces clear

Pillows and stuffed owls belong outside an infant’s crib or bassinet. A nursery theme does not make a soft decoration suitable for sleep. HealthyChildren safe-sleep guidance.

Follow the component care labels

Check the chosen yarn, stuffing, pillow insert and any hardware before washing. A washable yarn does not by itself establish that a complete stuffed or assembled project will hold its shape in a machine.

Crochet owl pattern questions

Are all thirteen ideas crochet?

Yes. All thirteen entries use crochet. The matching baby pieces and toy colourways stay together, and the forest PDF’s tree and leaf baskets remain bonuses.

Which projects have step-by-step photographs?

The Ollie Toy Trio includes assembly photographs. The Forest Trio includes shared technique tutorials and charts. Owl Whooties shows finished pieces and close details; those photos are not a complete making-stage sequence.

Does every idea include a free PDF?

Yes. The button under each entry opens its matching free PDF. Download the complete file so you have the material list, size-specific instructions and any charts or technique pages.

Are these crochet owls suitable as pet toys?

They are not designed or tested here for pet play. Several include stuffing, buttons, plastic eyes, tassels or scarves. Choose a purpose-made pet toy appropriate to your animal instead of assuming an owl softie is suitable.
